"BOWER: The Bowers of Uniontown descend from Matthew Bower, who was born in Stock Stadt [sic!] , Bavaria, Germany, in February 1810, where he lived until 1854. He left his native land, coming from Stock Stadt down the river by flatboat to Mainz, thence by steam to Havre, where he embarked by sailing vessel for New York, consuming six weeks on the voyage. He was a stone mason, and on arriving in Philadelphia at once found work at his trade. Six weeks after he suffered the misfortune of a sunstroke while working there, which left him ever afterward unable to perform arduous labor, and he remained in Philadelphia, where he obtained a position as night watchman. He died in 1886. He was a son of Joseph Bower [Joseph Bauer], who never left Bavaria. Katherine Bott, wife of Matthew Bower, was also of Bavarian birth, and came to the United States with her husband, dying in Philadelphia in 1902, aged ninety-three years. Their children: Andrew J. (of whom further), Frederick [Gottfried], now living in Philadelphia; Margaret, took the vows of a sister of charity and died in a convent; Adam, a real estate dealer of Morgantown, West Virginia; Katherine, widow of Andrew Fisher, resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[...]"
